This month marked the 10 year anniversary of the Edwards Dam being removed from Maine’s Kennebec River. This was the first time in this country that a dam was removed for purely ecological reasons, and since then a flood (zing!) of more than 600 other dams have been removed nationwide. Not only has the beautiful Kennebec, now connecting to the sea again after 160 years, seen a resurgence of migratory fish, but the legal proceedings that took down the dam were at first entirely advocated by the local community.
