Spotlight On: JustWork

Miss Angela gave me a heads up to JustPotters and the beautiful work they produce, including adorable garden planters:

Digging a little deeper, however, it seems like JustPotters is part of a much larger organization, a social enterprise whose goal is gainful employment for all – JustWork.

JustWork and a Social Enterprise Solution

Physical disabilities, mental illness, homelessness and addictions are among the barriers preventing some from finding appropriate, steady employment. Rather, persons facing such barriers are often marked as unemployable.

For people facing multiple barriers to the traditional workforce, JustWork fosters dignified, gainful work opportunities through the development of social enterprises. Because social enterprises are hybrid organizations focused on both social and economic outcomes, they can offer:

  • Safe places of employment with more flexible work hours and job expectations.
  • Work experience and skill development enabling a transition to more regular job situations.

JustWork emerged from the life and ministry of Grandview Calvary Baptist Church in the Grandview-Woodlands neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Vision:
A healthy community where people are meaningfully and gainfully employed and business practices embrace an ethical, social mandate.

Mission:
To foster dignified, gainful work opportunities for people facing multiple barriers to work.

Values:

Empowerment
By connecting and entrusting people with meaningful work opportunities, we desire to enlarge and elicit their gifts and capacities for work and therefore, their ability to contribute to the common good.

Interdependence
Our future is connected with those we are including in our work. Therefore, we embrace a model of interdependence – mutually giving and receiving to create a more caring and just neighborhood.

Stewardship
We will attend to the resources and relationships that we have received. Therefore, we will promote the good of others and the care of creation while being fiscally responsible.

Transformation
We are committed to a vision of the world where all are valued and all will make valuable contributions.

By connecting and entrusting people with meaningful work opportunities, we desire to enlarge and elicit their gifts and capacities for work and therefore, their ability to contribute to the common good.
At JustWork our understandings of these values are grounded in the Christian faith. We serve all without discrimination. Our work flows from a belief in the God given dignity of all people; that people change and grow.
